Sewer case: Two workers die in city hospital

New Delhi: Two men, who had inhaled toxic gases after getting trapped inside a sewage treatment plant of a prominent five star hotel in Lutyens’ Delhi, died at a city hospital on Tuesday.

The incident was reported on April 29. The sewage treatment plant is located in a building adjoining the main hotel building and that was where the incident took place.

According to DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma, the deceased have been identified as Ravindra Pal Singh (40), who worked as a contractual maintenance staff in the sewer treatment plant (STP) of Eco Pollutech Engineers Company, and Vikram (26), a contractual security guard of Taj Vivanta hotel. The latter had gone to rescue the others.

The incident was reported two days ago from Taj Vivanta, when five people fell unconscious inside the hotel’s sewage treatment plant., which is located in the basement.

Police officers said they would quiz the officials from the company that has the contract of maintaining the plant — Eco Pollutech Engineers Company. Five contractual employees, including the deputy manager, were trapped inside the plant and inhaled poisonous gases. They were not wearing safety gear. The three remaining patients are unfit to give any statement.

Police said the IPC Sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder have been added to the case for further investigation.
