According to the police, the incident took place at around midnight when a group of men allegedly tried to drag the woman from a bike and harass her.

New Delhi: Four night beat policemen on duty attached to Mukherjee Nagar police station were allegedly assaulted by a gang of drunken men when they tried to save a woman from being harassed by the unruly men.

According to the police, the incident took place at around midnight when a group of men allegedly tried to drag the woman from a bike and harass her. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused are suspected to be students preparing for entrance exams and are living in paying guest accommodations in Mukherjee Nagar area.

It all began when the policemen on duty tried to stop the accused men from misbehaving with the woman. The men allegedly charged the policemen and even vandalised the police vehicle.

Hearing the commotion a large number of students gathered, who tried to break the barricades. In a bid to stop the crowd, an assistant sub-inspector, Prakash, suffered head injuries, while three other policemen were also injured.  

The situation was brought under control after one of the policemen alerted their counterparts and reinforcement was called in to disburse the crowd. A case under relevant sections of the IPC for destroying public property, attacking a government servant, and outraging the modesty of a woman has been registered against unknown persons.
