New Delhi: Delhi lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday promised “strict immediate action” over the violence in Delhi University where ABVP members were accused of attacking students and teachers. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, after meeting the L-G, said people who threatened a martyr’s daughter should be arrested immediately, so that a message could be sent that the administration and police would not tolerate such activities.

Mr Baijal tweeted that he assured chief minister Arvind Kejriwal “that strict immediate action will be taken against those violating law”. The L-G’s assurance came after the Delhi chief minister demanded the arrest of “those who caused violence in DU, shouted anti-India slogans and who threatened (student) Gurmehar (Kaur)”. Speaking to reporters,  Mr Kejriwal said that the L-G assured him that strict action will be taken against people who indulged in violence and the people who threatened Gurmehar. He alleged that the BJP people were behind the violence and anti-India sloganeering in the Delhi University. “They (BJP) send their own people to shout anti-India slogans and after that their supporters come and beat other people,” Mr Kejriwal alleged. “Once the culprits are arrested, it will become clear that BJP’s people were behind the violence in the campus,” Mr Kejriwal said.

He also said that the people, who raised anti-India slogans in the JNU, were not yet arrested despite having their images because “they were their (BJP’s) own people”.

Mr Kejriwal accused the BJP of doing dirty politics and said: “The country will not tolerate BJP’s dirty politics. Now the youth and the students are against BJP. Parents are worried about their children.”

“I am not the Chief Minister of AAP only but of entire Delhi, similarly Kiren Rijiju is the Minister of State for Home for the entire country, so we are part of the system. It is the responsibility of every person in the system to protect Gurmehar and punish the culprits,” Mr Kejriwal added.

Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari, meanwhile, condemned role of Mr Kejriwal in the matter of Delhi University student’s affair and said Delhi chief minister is playing dirty politics in the matter.

“Role of Mr Kejriwal in the Delhi University matter is much similar to what he played last February in the Kanahiya Kumar incident or his conduct in October 2016 when he questioned the Army and government on surgical strike,” added Mr Tiwari.
