Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is considered to be one of the most difficult pilgrimage trips due to the severe climatic conditions the pilgrims have to bear in order to reach Mount Kailash, which is situated in the Himalayas. Also, the trip is only open from April to September every year.

The packages for the yatra are also very few and only government-authorised tour operators are allowed to undertake the trip. Here are some important tips to keep in mind before a Kailash Mansarovar yatra:

Physical fitness is most important. As the altitude is very high and there is trekking involved, it is the person’s responsibility to get a clean chit from the doctor. Those with asthma or heart disease are advised not to attempt the adventure. Those who are physically fit should start building their stamina and indulge in exercises like walking, jogging and running. Breathing exercises will also help the body to get acclimatised to the uneven terrain. One should also refrain from smoking.

Carry necessary medication and basics like antacids, antiseptics, bandages, pain balms, etc. As the trip will last for 13-14 days, a good quality backpack is a must. The necessary clothing and other essentials cannot be avoided. Moreover, the climatic conditions demand for many woollen clothes, gloves and socks. Invest in a good pair of trekking shoes.

All important documents should be carried in a safe yet easily accessible pocket. An ID card with your complete name and address should be clipped on the neck string as a precaution for an emergency situation. Stuffing the bag with unnecessary items is a complete no-no.
