This is the perfect monsoon weekend getaway from Kozhikode.

Kakkadampoyil comes under the Nilambur forest range and borders Malappuram district.

Nearly 50 km away from Kozhikode, Kakkadampoyil is the ultimate destination for those who would like to visit a picturesque terrain within a short distance. A trip to the misty place, especially during the monsoon, will be a refreshing experience for anyone.  Kakkadampoyil comes under the Nilambur forest range and borders Malappuram district.

Our aim was to get wet in the rain and so we opted for a motorcycle ride to the hills. The curvy, narrow roads offered us a good ride experience and with the cloudy weather, we braced ourselves for the imminent downpour. Kakkadampoyil is a rustic township, where tourism has not yet picked up. However, it is a boon for anyone who looks for a pristine place to chill out. Only a handful of resorts operate in the area. However, that may not be the case in the future as we saw several construction works going on while climbing the hill.

One of the major destinations marketed on travel websites is the Kozhippara Waterfalls. The Forest Department has made it an eco-tourism project. Tourists will only be able to watch the waterfalls from a distance as taking a dip in the stream is prohibited by the department.

We made a brisk visit to the waterfalls and when the sky grew darker, we decided to start our trek. After learning about the existence of a cave named after Pazhassi Raja, we decided to climb the hill. Halfway through the 2-kilometre trek, the much-awaited rain started and it poured down heavily.

It was fun to get wet and continue the walk. Though we were not able to spot any caves, the trek was a mesmerising experience. Finally, we reached the top of the hill to get a good view of the small townships and adjacent forest. As the rain did not abate, we opted to return and do some off-roading through the unpaved roads of Kakkadampoyil.

We took a different diversion from the waterfalls and as we went up the unpaved road, the rain started to subside. We placed ourselves at a hilltop again and as the rain disappeared, the place was filled with mist. After spending almost an hour in the misty terrain and clicking pictures, we decided to return. The road till the township was filled with mist and the ride was another wonderful experience. After taking down the details of a couple of resorts in the area, we headed back home.
