Moroccan TV airs makeup lessons for hiding beating marks

The segment had been broadcasted just two days before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

A Moroccan state broadcaster has sparked the fury women rights advocates and the general public after one of its daily programmes showed makeup tutorials on how to conceal injury marks as a result of domestic abuse. Channel 2M's Sabahiyat telecast the special segment on 23rd November which was just two days before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The makeup artist featured used cosmetics to conceal marks of beating on a model whose face was made up to look swollen with fake bruises. “We hope these beauty tips will help you carry on with your daily life”, the host said at the end of the demonstration.

Hundreds of women signed a petition that demanded not just an apology but also sanctions against the TV station. Although the channel later removed the clip of that show from its website, it is still being circulated by outraged netizens on social media.
