How to read the signs when your dog is stressed.

Chances are, your dog could be stressed or depressed.

There are times when owners miss the red flag when their usually energetic pup is suddenly withdrawn and listless. Chances are, your dog could be stressed or depressed.

Adaptation to a new place is one of the first causes of stress levels in dogs. Dr Sunilkumar of Felican Pet Hospital sheds light on stress and depression in dogs and says, “As the canine-human bond developed over the years, new man-made breeds took birth.  Each breed is developed according to the climate of that region. When breeds which were supposed to grow in colder regions got displaced to hot climatic conditions and vice-versa, stress levels rose in the animal.”

The second cause of stress and depression is separation from the owner. “This is called separation and social anxiety. These dogs lose appetite, develop skin disorders and other diseases.” This is most common in dog-shelters where the owner leaves the dog just for days or weeks.  “Travelling is also a reason for stress amongst dogs. They develop motion sickness while travelling due to this.”

The doctor also points at fireworks as the biggest reason for stress amongst dogs . “Firecrackers during festivals create stress and anxiety among dogs to no end. They jump at even the slightest sound.” He has this suggestion, “There are medicines to destress the dog and calm it. But  people should be aware of what they are getting into when buying a pet dog. They should never buy or adopt a dog as a toy for their child and they should also have the time and proper living condition for the upbringing of a dog. What the dog needs most is love and affection.”
