Many people are often wary of cosmetics that may contain harmful chemicals and try going for alternatives. But how safe are products which claim to be chemical-free?

Research has found that nail polishes claiming to be free of the toxic-trio DnBP, toluene and formaldehyde may have other toxins. The study suggested that they may lead to brain toxicity and even foetal abnormalities.

Scientists said that even as many chemicals have been banned, this only leads to substituting them with other toxins. In three brands, they found TPHP which is known to be a hormone disruptor.

Another chemical DEHP found in some of these brands can cause infertility and even cancer.
