Women are twice as likely to suffer from postnatal depression if they give birth to a son

Having a child is a special experience for a lot of people but at times it can come with complications. Postnatal depression is a mental health condition affecting a lot of women after childbirth.

Research suggests that mothers who give birth to boys are 79 per cent more likely to suffer from postnatal depression. The findings show that this happens due to increasing levels of inflammation in the immune system caused by having a son which may change chemical balances in the brain.

The study also suggested that women who face complications during childbirth are three times more likely to suffer from the condition. Postnatal depression affects almost one in every 10 women triggering feelings of sadness and tiredness.
