Small dogs urinate higher up on lamp posts to look bigger and avoid confrontation

The move may be a way to keep away from any confrontation with larger dogs as such interactions can turn out to be dangerous for them.

All species have specific ways of boosting their prominence among their kind, as ritual dances and other bizarre practices are proof of this tendency. Many animals have a way of marking their territory and indicating their presence to others by urinating to leave markers.

While male dogs also follow this to indicate age, health and sex to others, a new study has revealed something interesting about dogs that are smaller in size. Research shows that small dogs try to urinate higher on lamp posts in a bid to make them look bigger to other canines.

The findings suggest that smaller dogs urinate more frequently and at vertically oriented targets. The move may be a way to keep away from any confrontation with larger dogs as such interactions can turn out to be dangerous for them.

The trick helps smaller dogs establish their presence without having to directly face competitors.
