An audiovisual extravaganza

London-based Pianist Dinara Klinton's upcoming show will let you experience the pleasures of watching cinema during a concert.

We are always thrilled to hear about an Indian musician bagging a performance at an international concert. But the joy doubles when our country’s rich heritage and culture attract artists from abroad to take part in Indian events. Dinara Klinton, a pianist from London, is all set to host a Magic Piano & The Chopin Shorts concert in Mumbai. She will also be travelling to other cities for the same concert.

Magic Piano is an internationally acclaimed film concert wherein short, silent and animation films are set to live music on stage. Though this is a new genre of an entertainment, Dinara is all set to match her codes with the audiences’ expectations. Before that, she plans to introduce this art in schools by holding workshops in four different cities. “I think outreach is a very important part of a musician’s contribution to the community. By enthralling the younger generation, we may get new audiences in some years,” she says, adding, “During the workshops, I will try to paint a general picture on piano music and western composers. In the end, I will play some of the most famous works by those composers.”

Talking about her performance she says, “I will be playing some works by the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, Hungarian Liszt and Polish Chopin, as well as The Magic Piano and Chopin Sorts — films accompanied by Chopin’s music.”

Describing the concept, she explains, “It is possible to show the movie with pre-recorded piano playing or to actually have a concert piano performance alongside with the movie. I think this is a brilliant way to introduce people to western classical music.”

Dinara feels the music reinforces the action on screen and completes the experience. “Music is the world’s most emotional language and this way it’s possible to communicate what is there on the screen,” gushes the musician.

Fat Hamster, pl.ink!, Hamster Heaven and Papa’s Boy are some of the other films to be paired with the live piano.

Though this is Dinara’s first visit to the country, she is completely aware of Bollywood. “My grandmother loved Bollywood films and they are the main source of knowledge of Indian culture for my country. I do think the movies are spectacular,” the pianist says with a smile. “I have seen many pictures of beautiful Indian waterfalls. I hope to get a chance to see them once,” she adds.

Organising this event in many cities was not easy but Omar Haider, the managing director of the event, was determined to see it through. “The thought of incorporating a visual delight to the orchestral artistry came to me when I was in West End, London. I watched ‘Peter & The Wolf’’ and I witnessed the film’s musical score (soundtrack) being performed LIVE by orchestra. I thought this is kind of event that music lovers in India should also witness,” says Omar.

Apart from Magic Piano concert, in future the audience can also expect concert shows with iconic films being set to live music by some of the leading orchestras of the world.
