This might be disappointing for men, but a recent study has revealed that while men want to spend time with their spouse post retirement, retiring women’s preference is different; they choose grandkids over their husband. Fidelity Investments and the Stanford Center of Longevity surveyed 12,000 retirement savers and recent retirees on the “financial, social, and emotional factors” affecting decisions about whether and when they’ll retire.
While nearly 60 per cent of men cited spending time with their wife as a reason to retire, women seem to be less interested in couple bonding. Only 43 per cent of women said spending time with their spouses is a key motivation for retiring; grandchildren were a stronger pull, with 70 per cent saying they would retire to spend more time with the grandkids.
Also, the wealthier a couple is, the more excited they tend to be about post-retirement quality time. What’s more, 79 per cent of respondents said that they were pleasantly surprised by their level of financial comfort in retirement.
