Travel writer Matthew Karsten, (32), completed a trek across the United States, from Oregon to Maryland, hitchhiking through the entire journey. He took a total of 36 rides in cars and trucks, and even a speedboat. There was even an airplane hike at one point! As reported by Mashable, he documented the entire trip with photos and up-to-date entries on his travel blog, Expert Vagabond. He initially expected the trip to take two weeks, but it lasted five. And this Into the Wild kind of journey had no destination — it just ran its course of time. Karsten says the most exhausting part of the journey was talking to each and every driver who would give him a lift, having the same conversations over and over again. Some of his highlights included a freight train trip from Portland to Washington during a full moon; hitchhiking with ‘John’, the inventor of the Ultimate Pancake Sandwich; and travelling with a married pair of truckers from Tennessee.
