Topless women are trying to improve road safety in Russian town

The initiative has been welcomed by most pedestrians despite being controversial.

Road safety is a grave issue all over the world and reckless driving results into a high number of deaths in most countries. Russia is one of the countries known for several road accidents every year.

In an attempt to counter this growing menace, several campaigns are being launched to persuade drivers to slow down, like one in a Russian village which stationed topless women on a pedestrian crossing as part of an experiment.

The women stood on the side of the road holding up signs warning drivers about 60 and 40 kilometres per hour speed limits. They were dressed in tight boots and pants only, as no accidents were reported despite apprehensions about drivers being distracted.

The initiative, previously started in 2013, has received positive reactions even from elderly pedestrians despite the controversial approach. Reports suggested that speeding drivers, mostly men, did slow down to see female road safety assistants.

The country has been added to WHO’s list of most dangerous nations for drivers for its record number of accidents.
