With reference to your editorial Pointless pedantry (March 4), Delhi high court judge Pratibha Rani got swayed by emotion. Instead of a 23-page bail order, “the mundane act of granting bail” could have been finished in three-four lines. She said that campus politics and sloganeering is “a kind of infection”. She quoted from the patriotic song Mere desh ki dharti and emphasised that Indians enjoy their freedom only because “our forces are protecting our frontiers in the most difficult terrain in the world”. While use of metaphors is acceptable, the court’s rhetorical foray is unnecessary.
