Uttarakhand quagmire

The Supreme Court finally decided to allow a floor test in the Uttarakhand Assembly on May 10, but without the nine suspended Congress MLAs. However, the case of disputed President’s Rule and the tussle over whether Harish Rawat’s government was in a minority, received a new twist when a video of Mr Rawat negotiating a deal to coax the rebel MLAs back to his side surfaced recently. While the courts have been swift to keep the situation in Uttarakhand in check, they were beaten by the politics on ground. With Mr Rawat’s position somewhat compromised, the floor test seems like a farce waiting to be played out.
