The appointment of Urjit Patel as Raghuram Rajan’s successor shows that the NDA is willing to continue with the monetary policy reforms initiated in Dr Rajan’s tenure. Contrary to his assessment to the RBI’s role as that of an owl, Dr Patel would do well to be hawkish in targeting retail inflation and making public sector banks clear bad debt from their balance sheets. As the first RBI governor to chair a monetary policy committee, Dr Patel’s appointment is a signal shift in RBI’s governance.
