Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s remark about toilets being more important than temples is undoubtedly praiseworthy. It is ridiculous that huge sums of money are donated by influential leaders and politicians to build temples, while people in rural areas of the country lack basic amenities like proper toilets. It is hoped that Mr Modi’s rhetoric is not just an electoral gimmick and that he takes steps to implement what he said to improve the dismal human development graph in his state.
