The Maharashtra government’s decision to withdraw its controversial sedition resolution that gave the police the power to act against anyone critical of the state or Central government is welcome. If merely criticising politicians or civil servants leads lawmakers to arrest citizens, then the day won’t be far when we need to be armed with anticipatory bail before even writing a letter to the editor. The need of the hour is to uphold the right to freedom of speech and expression which is guaranteed under the Constitution.
