Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of skill (kaushal), development (vikas) and harmony (sadbhav) for the country’s youth, imparted on the occasion of the 20th National Youth Festival, was in line with his stress on promotion of “Start-Up India, Stand-Up India”. But the inclusion of the word harmony in his rhetoric is rather belated. His condemnation of Maoist violence — “Haath hatya ke liye nahin, hunar ke liye hone chahiye” — should apply equally to the right-wing zealots who perpetrate lynchings (Dadri) and killings (M.M. Kalburgi, Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar) in the name of religion.
