Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement that “some people” were not able to digest the fact that a “chaiwala” has become Prime Minister sounds outdated and is a poor attempt at covering up his government’s failure on all fronts over the past two years. The Modi government is surrounded by controversy over a dalit student’s suicide, police action in Jawaharlal Nehru University and, now, the Jat agitation for inclusion in the OBC list. Key bills continue to linger in the margins of parliamentary debate. It’s time Mr Modi dug in his heels and spoke up in Parliament, instead of doling out stale rhetoric.
