At the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, the Delhi police approached a street theatre group asking them if they were from Jawaharlal Nehru University, as if it is a crime to be a student of JNU! Even at the Patiala House courts, lawyers, and Delhi BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma, were filmed beating up students and members of the press for trying to attend JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar’s remand proceedings. This outpouring of anger against students shows that the Centre didn’t send the police to JNU out of concern for national security, but to settle political scores and terrorise students into silence, threatening them with dire consequences for speaking their mind.
