During the Rajya Sabha elections, a blame game started in Haryana after the Congress was surprised to see its candidate, lawyer R.K. Anand, not making it through to the Upper House despite having the numbers. It is alleged that former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda may have influenced cross-voting and forfeiture of Congressmen’s votes in the election that led to the victory of the BJP candidate. The Election Commission must examine the allegations in Haryana and engage legislators in a dialogue on transparency, and the anti-defection law should be extended to Rajya Sabha elections.
