What happened in Mathura is a major challenge to the rule of law. It is horrifying that the superintendent of police and station house officer were killed while the district magistrate was injured in a guerrilla-type attack by the protesters after an attempt to evict them from 250 acres of government land that had been illegally occupying for the last two and a half years. These protesters were earlier thrown out from Bareilly and the Mathura administration’s inaction against them for such a long period is questionable. The incident calls for a thorough judicial inquiry and exemplary punishment for the culprits irrespective of who and what they are.
