In its response to Bharatiya Janata Party veterans targeting the BJP leadership over the Bihar poll defeat, Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Arun Jaitley say that the practice of collective responsibility for an election defeat was initiated during the Vajpayee-Advani era. Perhaps they have forgotten that Mr Vajpayee was a liberal Prime Minister. A system of joint decision-making was in place and the responsibility of a defeat was taken collectively. In Narendra Modi’s reign, decisions and power are concentrated in the hands of a few leaders. The responsibility of failure should rest only on the decision-makers.
