By refusing to chant “Bharat Mata ki jai” and calling his suspension a conspiracy of the Bharatiya Janata Party, AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan has effectively lost the generic patriotic slogan to the right wing. While the right wing has a simplistic definition of “national/ anti-national”, the AIMIM’s refusal to chant the slogan shows it to be in collusion with the Right. Mr Pathan has unnecessarily allowed the conspiracy to fester, instead of nipping it in the bud by saying “Bharat Mata ki jai”. For once, the secular plank doesn’t hold.
