West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to drop “West” from the state’s name would have made sense if it was made to do away with the colonial terminology that came in after the Partition of Bengal by the British in 1907. But it was born out of Ms Banerjee’s anger at being made wait for five hours for her turn to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, since West Bengal is way down the alphabetical order.
