The news that pitches for Indian Premier League will be using up close to 60 lakh litres of water for maintenance at the three venues nominated for matches in Maharashtra sounds criminal. On top of that the senior counsel appearing for the BCCI had the gall to ask the Bombay high court if we “are going to let all pitches in the country die like this,” referring to Latur, the area reeling under the most severe drought in Maharashtra. While the Bombay high court showed prudence in not cancelling the event at such short notice, one wonders what the state government was thinking when it allowed 20 matches to be played in the drought-hit state.
