Countless abortions and sex selection notwithstanding, while the “one child” policy helped China grow leaps and bounds post-liberalisation in 1970, it also left the country’s citizens scarred for want of wholesome family ties, treating its entire populace as a nursery for a future workforce. It is ironic that this brought China to a situation where it would soon be short of workers. Let us hope India does not imbibe this “growth model” — an alibi for bypassing social welfare by chasing ephemeral development.
