Following the loss of 25 lives in a stampede in Varanasi, the death of 22 people in a fire accident at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar points to the no-existent safety mechanism to engage in a rescue mission. While road and fire accidents, stampedes and bridge collapses have become a regular feature in the country, the sad fact is that after every mishap the authorities promise to take action in future. But as the SUM Hospital fire incident shows, we’ve done nothing to address such tragedies.
