Finance minister Arun Jaitley’s Rs 38,500-crore Budget allocation for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and Rs 35,984 crore for the farming sector shows that the Centre is on the right side when it comes to the well-being of the rural sector. While the 0.5 per cent Krishi Kalyan cess imposed on all services to fund the allocation for agriculture will burn a bigger hole in the common man’s pocket, it is a small price to pay for doubling farmers’ incomes over the next six years.
