Union finance minister Arun Jaitley’s objection to a proposal to make it mandatory for companies to reveal whether they have put in place an internal complaints committee to inquire into sexual harassment complaints by women employees by saying that industry representatives were against “enhanced disclosures under the Companies Act, 2013, and adding to these may not be desirable,” is dated and unprincipled. In fact, this will prompt all private sector entities to comply with the law against sexual harassment at the workplace, ensuring greater safety for women.
