The decision of the Trimbakeshwar Temple authorities in Nashik, Maharashtra, to restrict men’s entry to the inner sanctum of the temple in a move to adhere to the Bombay high court judgment on women’s entry to temples is regressive. Instead of allowing women entry into the inner sanctum, it deliberately misreads the high court’s order by denying entry to men as well. What makes the decision more surprising is that one of the temple trustees is a member of the judiciary. So women can only be equal to men in worship through a denial of rights, not an enabling rule
