The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s synchronised attacks on Paris, Beirut and a Russian passenger jet, which was downed in Egypt, are a clear invitation to war. The absence of any effective ground forces in Iraq and Syria and the procrastination over Bashar al-Assad’s fate have cost 129 lives in Paris. The ISIS has exploited the Schengen area and the EU’s humanitarian embrace of Syrian refugees. It is time the West, through Nato and diplomacy with Syria, Iran and Russia, launched a ground offensive against the ISIS, closing the unfinished business of America’s “Operation Enduring Freedom” in Iraq.
