I am saddened by Umberto Eco’s obituaries that various newspapers have carried as it limits the Eco as the author of The Name of the Rose. Eco was not only an author of novels as he himself said “I write novels on the weekends”. His contributions as a critic, semiotician, literary theorist and editor cannot be forgotten. He sought to interpret cultures through their signs and symbols. He inspired readers and aspiring writers to look at everything with a fresh perspective. One cannot ignore the impact Eco’s writings had on one’s life.
