With reference to the report High turnouts seen in Assam, West Bengal polling (April 12), huge voter turnouts in the Assam and West Bengal Assembly elections contradict the perception that people are disillusioned with electoral democracy. The second and final phase of elections in Assam saw 85 per cent turnout to vote while West Bengal was not far behind with around 80 per cent turnout in the second part of the first phase of elections. One is keen to see whether this turnout will translate into a major upset in the two key states of West Bengal and Assam.
