The Supreme Court has found itself bound by the limits of the law in the December 2012 gangrape case. This was the rarest of rare cases — an abominable crime by that deserved application of the best of legal acumen. Tenets and laws were developed over more than three centuries to tackle juvenile exploitation and the resultant crime it spawned. These were, hence, oriented far more towards correction and much less on punishment. Society must hold itself equally answerable as the juvenile, as heinous crimes have reached unprecedented levels. The apex court could have used this opportunity to drive home a message to the society.
