While the BJP criticised Shashi Tharoor for saying that “Bhagat Singh was the Kanhaiya Kumar of his time,” the Congress Party distanced itself from him. Bhagat Singh stood for “azadi” from foreign rule. Mr Kumar calls for azadi from multiple aspects of oppression that continue to divide our society almost 70 years since Independence. Instead of hounding Mr Tharoor for his spur of the moment remark, we should thank him for reminding us of one of the first thinkers to conceive of azadi as not just Independence but the right to speak our mind.
