Veteran character actor Saeed Jaffrey’s death is saddening. Through his performances in Shatranj ke Khilari, Masoom and Chashme Buddoor, the actor left a lasting experience on the viewers’ psyche, whether desi or firangi. As a mainstream Daddyji, as Khalid Mohamed put it in his obituary, At home in Lucknawi and Queen’s angrezi (Nov. 17), Jaffrey’s role was memorable, according to me. His death evokes nostalgia for a cinema which was closer to the reality of Indian lives.
