A 25-year old woman was allegedly gangraped by four men in a moving vehicle in Bidhannagar Sector V area on Sunday night and then left her at a deserted place near Baisakhi canal in the early hours of Monday. She was found in a senseless condition and admitted at a local hospital in Salt Lake. The traumatised victim later went to the Bidhannagar North police station on Monday and lodged a complaint of rape with the women police station there.

Police sources said that the victim, a resident of Baguihati, had stated in her complaint that was waiting on the road in front of a restaurant for transport at Salt Lake Sector V at around 12.30 am on Sunday night. She asked another youth, who was standing near her, whether he was doing the same. The man answered in the positive and asked her to wait a bit. Within a few minutes, a car arrived. The woman was overpowered and taken inside the car. The vehicle then whisked away and the accused took turns to rape her before dropping her at a deserted place. She was spotted by an auto-rickshaw driver, who informed a police patrol van. The policemen took her to a nearby hospital.

“We have initiated a case of gangrape. The victim’s statement have been recorded and investigation has started,” detective department, Bidhannagar commissionerate, deputy commissioner Kankar Prasad Barui said.

Sleuths have started collecting the CCTV footages of a number of prominent locations in Sector V to track the car. The CCTV footage in front of the restaurant from which she was kidnapped is also being retrieved.

“We are of the opinion that the four youths involved in the crime are well-acquainted with the night club culture in the commissionerate area. The footages of some night clubs are also being synchronised for the sake of probe. Our experts have also started making sketches of the accused based on the victim’s description,” an investigating officer said.
