‘Only dream is progress, prosperity of Bengal’

Expressing anguish over what she described as slander and character assassination, Ms Banerjee said that in politics there should be a “lakshman rekha”. “The people disapproved of the manner in which the Opposition tried to mislead them. They didn’t like the way the Opposition spread lies against me in this election. This is not good for politics and not good democracy. The people of Bengal are very intelligent,” she added.

Being magnanimous in victory, Ms Banerjee made an appeal to everyone to maintain peace and harmony. There will no victory march. She asked her party workers to organise cultural programmes from May 20 to May 30. She acknowledged that her responsibility had increased even further. “But I accept this challenge because my only dream is the progress and prosperity of Bengal,” she added.

She said her new government would give priority to socio-economic development of the downtrodden farmers and workers. Rejecting the charge of corruption, she said that it was misleading propaganda. “There is no corruption in Bengal,” she added.
