A fire broke out in a restaurant at Waterloo Street in Dalhousie area on Wednesday morning.

At around 10 am when a female employee of the eatery came to join work she found dark smoke billowing out of a hole at mezzanine floor between ground and first floors though cooking had not also started then. She informed manager Soumitra Roy, sources revealed.

The restaurant was closed at 10 pm on Tuesday and was scheduled to open at 12 pm on Wednesday. Five fire tenders were pressed into service. Fire personnel used a ladder for entry to the first floor.

The situation was brought under control within half-an-hour. Preliminary investigations suggest of an electric short-circuit leading to the blaze. However, no one was injured in the incident.

According to the fire brigade personnel, some commercial as well as LPG gas cylinders were stocked at the restaurant though fire safety measures were in place.

Mr Roy informed that the work of earmarking the gas bank for placing the cylinders has started recently following a direction from the fire and emergency services department. Meanwhile, another minor fire broke out at a slum at Ramjan Lane in Jorabagan. No one was injured in the incident.
