EOW hunts for 2 in Rs 10-crore fraud

Officials from the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) have registered a case and are searching for two accused who have allegedly looted residents of Colaba, Santa Cruz, Bandra and Mahim for more than Rs 10 crore.

The complaint was registered by Raees Ansari (30) at Colaba police station on Monday and was later transferred to the EOW. Commenting on the case, a Colaba police official said, “According to Ansari’s complaint, the two accused were married and were residents of Santa Cruz. They met him a few days ago and befriended Ansari and others around their residence. They both claimed to be directors and seniors officials of well-known companies.”

The officer further added that the accused would allegedly ask the residents for money promising to return double the amount in three months. Convinced by them, the residents gave them money that amounted to more than ' 10 crore. But at the end of the three-month period, the duo allegedly refused to receive the residents’ calls or meet them.

“The complainant said that the accused approached him through one of his neighbours and continued to communicate with him frequently. The duo allegedly had claimed that they know many famous people and owned several large firms,” said crime PI Asaram Pathare of Colaba police station. The inspector also said that Ansari was asked to invest money in the accused’s chocolate factory for which he gave them lakhs of rupees. But when he called them up to check on the payment after three months, they refused to give him the money, said the inspector Mr Pathare.

He further added, “The complainant later came to know that the accused had taken money from others people from same area over the last two years. The accused has allegedly also taken bank loans worth lakh of rupees and are now absconding.”
