A highly meritorious student, who was brutally thrashed last Friday on the mere suspicion that he had plucked mangoes, succumbed to his injuries. Though the Haridevpur police arrested two persons, the incident revived the horror of the killing of a young ITI student, Kaushik Purakait, on the suspicion of being a cattle-lifter at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas a month ago.
The victim Aniruddha Biswas from Satyajit Park in Thakurpukur, who recently passed the higher secondary examination with flying colours securing star marks in several subjects, was a well-behaved young boy. He was preparing to take admission for graduation in computer science at Ashutosh College. The 18-year-old was suffering from jaundice a for couple of days.
On June 3 evening, he went out with his friend Supratim Biswas. “Suddenly one Chinmoy Sardar of Purbapara was seen chasing two persons who however fled. He came to us and started questioning about plucking of mangoes from his home,” Supratim said.
“Suddenly another youth joined him claiming we two were friends of the two who fled. While accusing us of plucking the mangoes, they kicked and punched us for around 15 minutes. Both of us were injured.”
Next day, Aniruddha was admitted to a local nursing home from where he was shifted to a private hospital in Ekbalpore, where he died at around 10 pm on Tuesday. His uncle Abhijit Biswas alleged that when the family members went to lodge a complaint at the Haridevpur police station, the police refused them.
On Wednesday Chinmoy, an ESI employee, and another accused Binod Balmiki, a medicine shop-owner, were arrested by the police.
