Democrats gathered in Philadelphia formally selected Tim Kaine as their US vice-presidential candidate on Wednesday, completing the party’s ticket for the November election.

Mr Kaine, a 58-year-old senator from the battleground state of Virginia, was nominated by voice vote.

Congresswoman and acting convention chair Marcia Fudge motioned to dispense with the roll call vote and nominate Mr Kaine by acclamation, which led to a chorus of “Ayes.”

“The motion to suspend the rules and nominate by acclamation is adopted,” declared Ms Fudge to loud cheers.

The tickets are now set for both parties: Hillary Clinton and running mate Mr Kaine for the Democ-rats, with Republicans Donald Trump and running mate Mike Pence, both of whom were nominated last week and their party’s convention in Cleveland.

Mr Kaine urged his countrymen they “better not” believe Republican preside-ntial nominee Donald Tru-mp whose “believe me” rhetoric promises great things without ever explai-ning how. In his acceptance speech, the 58-year-old Senator mocked the 70-year-old reality TV star’s often cited remarks “believe me”, amid applause from the audience.

“The guy promises a lot. But you might have noticed, he has a habit of saying the same two words right after he makes his biggest promi-ses. You guys know the words I mean ‘Believe me. It’s gonna be great — beli-eve me!’” Mr Kaine said.

“He never tells you how he is going to do any of the things he says he is going to do. He just says, “believe me”. So here is the question. Do you really believe him Donald Trump’s whole career says you better not,” he added.
