India has “strongly” taken up the issue of Indian students’ safety with Ukraine after three Indian medical students were stabbed Sunday by three Ukranian nationals, with two succumbing to their injuries. The third one has been hospitalised. All are from Uttar Pradesh.

“In an unfortunate event, three Indian students in Uzhgorod Medical College in Ukraine were stabbed by three Ukranian nationals around 3 am Sunday. Pranav Shaindilya, a third-year student from Muzzafarnagar, and Ankur Singh, a fourth-year student from Ghaziabad, were stabbed fatally and died,” an MEA source said. Indrajeet Singh Chauhan, a third-year student from Agra, was also stabbed but is recuperating in hospital.

Based on his complaint, the police there caught the three attackers, who were trying to cross the Ukranian border. “Passports/ documents of the three Indian students and a blood-stained knife were reportedly recovered from them,” the MEA source added.

The MEA said the embassy in Kiev had spoken to the families of the students, and was making arrangements to send the two bodies back to India.
