Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed on Wednesday promised to intensify a nation-wide anti-terror clampdown, a day after a Hindu priest was hacked to death by ISIS jihadists in Bangladesh, which has seen a series of brutal attacks by Islamists on minorities and secular activists.

“If they (militants) think they could turn Bangladesh upside down, they are wrong. They will be exposed to justice in the soil of Bangladesh and their patrons will also not be spared,” Ms Wajed said in the Parliament.

She said the security forces would continue to track down the militants anywhere in the country and they would be exposed to justice even if it takes years or decades.

Ms Wajed’s comments come after three operatives of the outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were killed in two predawn security raids early on Tuesday in Dhaka and north-western Rajshahi, while another member of the outfit was killed overnight at Shibganj sub-district in north west Bogra.

Meanwhile, the police shot dead an Islamist militant on Wednesday, the fourth killed since the crackdown was launched against suspected jihadists blamed for a wave of gruesome killings.

The 25-year-old militant was killed during a gunbattle with the police in northern Bogra district, where he was suspected of bombing a minority Shia shrine last year, an officer said.

Kawser, who uses one name, was the fourth member of the JMB killed since the crackdown on Tuesday. The banned group is blamed for dozens of murders of religious minorities and secular and liberal activists.

-"Kawser was shot during a gunfight between the police and JMB militants under a bridge at Shibganj in Bogra,-" Bogra district police spokesman Gaziur Rah-man said.

“He died on the way to a hospital. He directly took part in the bomb attack on a Shia mosque in Bogra last October and we believe he also took part in other killing missions,-" Mr Rahman said.
