The government said the attack was carried out by a 28-year-old Syrian man who was an ISIS member and had recently entered Turkey from Syria.
The bomber, identified as Nabil Fadli, detonated his charge on Sultanahmet Square which is home to Turkey’s most visited historic sites.
Turkey’s interior minister said on Wednesday the suicide bomber was not on any wanted list but had registered with Turkey’s immigration authorities. Efkan Ala said the man’s fingerprints were on record with the Turkish authorities.
With Germany rocked by the attack, German interior minister Thomas de Ma-iziere arrived in Istanbul and visited the site of the attack and meet Turkish officials Wednesday.
However, Mr de Maiziere said that there is no indication that Tuesday’s suicide attack in Istanbul specifically targeted Germans, adding there was no need for nationals to cancel travel plans.
Meanwhile, Turkey has detained 68 suspects, including 3 Russians, in raids across the country, state media said on Wednesday.
