US President Barack Obama is set to introduce a series of gun control executive measures, including expanding background checks, bypassing the Congress in a bid to control mass shooting menace that has claimed over 1,00,000 lives in the last decade. Receiving a set of recommendations in this regard from his Attorney-General and FBI director, Mr Obama said these measures are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, and that but they are ones that the overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners, support and believe.
“So over the next several days, we’ll be rolling out these initiatives. We’ll be making sure that people have a very clear understanding of what can make a difference and what we can do,” Mr Obama said. “Although we have to be very clear that this is not going to solve every violent crime in this country, it’s not going to prevent every mass shooting, it’s not going to keep every gun out of the hands of a criminal, it will potentially save lives and spare families the pain and the extraordinary loss that they’ve suffered as a consequence of a firearm getting in the hands of the wrong people.
Mr Obama may ignite political firestorm by byp-assing Congress with these measures, which could spa-rk legal challenges. Repub-licans say Mr Obama is misusing his powers. Congress, which is controlled by Re-publicans, had previously rejected Mr Obama’s proposals for legislation to ti-ghten gun rules. Mr Obama, however, exuded confidence that the recommendations that are being made by his team are ones that are entirely consistent with the Second Amendment and people’s lawful right to bear arms.
