In his final summer vacation as the US President, Mr Obama has spent almost every night on the Massachusetts island, painting its towns red.
The stunner came late on Sunday when the President assembled his security and press entourage to go out at nearly 11 pm. It was a move all but impossible to imagine happening in Washington, where Mr Obama’s occasional social outings tend to begin much earlier.
The White House said Mr Obama is just trying to get the most out of the time he’s spending here with family and friends before the busy season, packed with foreign and domestic travel, begins.
On Sunday, after Mr Obama had played golf for about five hours, a small group of reporters that accompanies the President in public, was released for dinner but told to reassemble later.
After a circuitous route on largely darkened roads through five of the vineyard’s six towns, the motorcade pulled up to a Southern seafood restaurant.
The White House said the First Family, including Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha, had joined friends for a “social event”.
Mr Obama socialised for about an hour before returning his family to their rented home just before 1 am on Sunday.
